About PoliteCrawler

You found this page because a request to your site had this header:

User-Agent: PoliteCrawler/0.1.0 (+https://mark1russell7.github.io/crawler/bot/)

PoliteCrawler is the user agent of polite-crawler, open-source software for research and for AI assistants. A person runs it on their own computer to read pages that they or their assistant asked for. It is not a search engine, and it does not collect training data.

Many people can run the software. When the operator gave a contact, the From header and the User-Agent include it.

  • It reads robots.txt first and obeys it, as RFC 9309 specifies.
  • It sends one request at a time to your site, with a rest of 3 seconds or more between two requests.
  • It fetches the pages that it was asked for. It does not follow every link of your site.
  • It obeys Retry-After on a 429 or a 503.
  • It stops at a refusal. After a challenge, a 402 or a 403, it sends no more requests to your site in that run.
  • It sends conditional requests. With an ETag or a Last-Modified date, your server can answer 304 Not Modified and send no body.

To block PoliteCrawler, add this group to your robots.txt:

User-agent: PoliteCrawler
Disallow: /

To slow it down, add a crawl delay in seconds:

User-agent: PoliteCrawler
Crawl-delay: 10

When the crawler fetches a page for an AI assistant, it also obeys your rules for Claude-User.

To refuse the use of your text as AI input, add a content signal. The crawler keeps such a page but holds back its text from an AI reader:

User-agent: *
Content-Signal: ai-input=no

Test your robots.txt with the same code that the crawler uses.
